Every custom cake starts with the same conversation: how big, which flavor, what filling, how much, and can you do it by Saturday. A cake builder on your website has that conversation for you. The customer designs the cake, sees the price as they go, picks a pickup date, and sends you one complete request. We call ours the Oddie Cake Builder.
How a cake builder works
- The customer picks the basics: size or servings, shape and number of tiers.
- Then the flavor: sponge, filling and frosting, from the options you offer.
- Then the decoration: a message, colors, toppers, and a photo for inspiration if they have one.
- The price updates live with every choice, so nobody has to ask "how much?".
- They choose a pickup or delivery date, and only dates that respect your lead time are available.
- You get the order by e-mail with every detail and their contact information. You confirm it and take the deposit the way you already do.
It is a request, not a checkout. You stay in control of every cake before anything is paid.
What to include
- Sizes in servings, not just inches. Most people know how many guests they have, not how wide the cake should be.
- Your real flavors and fillings, with any that cost extra clearly marked.
- Allergy and dietary notes: what you can and can't do (nut-free, gluten-free, vegan), in plain words.
- Photos of your own cakes next to each style, so customers order what you actually make.
- A "from" price on the page, so people who are just browsing still get an idea.
Set your rules once
- Lead time: for example, custom cakes need at least 5 days. The calendar simply won't offer earlier dates.
- Days you're closed or fully booked.
- A rush option with its own price, if you accept last-minute orders.
- Your deposit and cancellation policy, shown before they send the request.
These are the questions you answer over and over in your messages. Writing them once on your website saves you that time every week.
Help people find it on Google
People search for things like "custom cakes near me" or "birthday cake order" plus their town. To show up:
- Give the page a clear title with what and where, such as "Custom cakes in Montclair, NJ".
- Link to it from your Google Business Profile, and add your cakes as products there with a photo and a starting price.
- Ask happy customers for a review that mentions the cake. A QR card in the cake box makes it easy.

Questions
What is a custom cake builder?
A page on your bakery website where customers choose the size, flavor, filling and decoration of a cake, see the price update as they go, pick a pickup date and send you the complete order.
Do customers pay through the cake builder?
It works best as a request: you receive the full order, confirm it, and take the deposit the way you already do. That way you approve every cake before anything is paid.
Can I use my own flavors, sizes and prices?
Yes. The builder is set up with your own options and prices, your lead time and the days you're closed.
Will a cake builder help my bakery show up on Google?
It helps when the page has a clear title with your town, is linked from your Google Business Profile, and your reviews mention your cakes.
